POWER PROBLEMS
3 LEVELS

There are nine distinct type of power problems
and three basic levels of UPS power protection

The 3 levels of UPS power protection are:

  1. Level 3 - UPS protects from power problems 1 through 3
  2. Level 5 - UPS protects from power problems 1 through 5.
  3. Level 9 - UPS protects from power problems 1 through 9.

NOTE: The length of time a UPS will provide protection is a function of Size (VA) and Load (VA), not of the level of protection

1. Series 3 UPS - A Series 3 UPS offers basic protection at the lowest available price.
Series 3 UPSs are an entry-level protection system that provides the most basic power protection. Series 3 UPS technology operates in offline or standby mode to protect systems in the event of power failures, sags, or surges.
A Series 3 UPS protects from power problems 1 through 3.
By design Series 3 UPSs do not protect from power problems 4 through 9.

2. Series 5 UPS - A Series 5 UPS offers solid performance at value pricing.
Series 5 UPSs are an intermediate level protection system. Series 5 UPS technology operates in line-interactive mode to protect systems in the event of power failures, sags, surges, Overvoltage and Undervoltage.
A Series 5 UPS protects from power problems 1 through 5.
By design Series 5 UPSs do not protect from power problems 6 through 9.

3. Series 9 UPS - When only the best will do. A Series 9 UPS offers you maximum protection and peace of mind.
Series 9 UPS technology operates in on-line (sometimes called double conversion) mode to protect systems in the event of power failures, sags, surges, Overvoltage, Undervoltage, line noise, frequency variations, switching transients or harmonic distortion.
By design they protect from all 9 power problems. Only a Level 9 is an on-line UPS which provides:

  • Internet quality power; and,
  • a performance warrantee.

IN PRACTICE, the choice of the length of run time is determined by the time it takes to locate the person able to shut down the system and to perform the shut down. (Or to transfer the system to an alternative, stable power source.)

How long a UPS will provide protection is a function of Size (VA) and Load (VA), not of the level of protection
